Key Objectives

The Challenge

A large international airport, one of the busiest in the world, welcoming 87 million passengers in 2023 approached our authorised partner after experiencing unstable internal temperature, energy loss, dust, sand and insect ingress.

With the airport experiencing such high passenger numbers, they are required to ensure the smooth movement of large groups of people through the arrivals and departures doorways – which was the cause of a lot of their issues.

AG Environmental, CPA Group’s authorised partner, assisted the airport in finding a solution, addressing the specific challenges they faced.

Their key objectives were to:

  • Keep the heat and humidity out and cooled conditioned air in (by stabilising the internal thermal environment, it ensures a more comfortable passenger experience and improved working environment for staff)
  • Achieve energy savings by preventing thermal transfer through the loss of conditioned air
  • Improve Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) by preventing outdoor air pollutant entry

The Solution

After visiting the site, the AG Environmental team identified the Enershield Air Barrier as the ideal solution.

Proven to stabilise the thermal environment, decrease energy costs and reduce dust, sand and fly ingress, Enershield Air Barriers work by creating an effective seal on open doorways.

This seal is achieved by re-circulating facility air at a specific velocity and volume over an open doorway in a smooth laminar flow.

Enershield Air Barriers are specifically designed to combat challenges such as those faced by this international airport, improving the throughput of passengers and providing an energy-saving solution whilst creating a comfortable environment for passengers and staff alike.

Their telescopic sliders and wall brackets allow our team to install them easily, both horizontally or vertically. The acoustic insulation results in quiet operation, making them suitable for a wide variety of facilities.

Enershield Air Barriers can reduce energy loss through open doors by as much as 90%, translating into energy savings and improved occupant comfort.

The Result

Following the installation of the Enershield Air Barrier, the results were measured to determine their efficiency and impact.

Temperature fluctuation

The team performed a temperature fluctuation test, demonstrating the true impact of the Enershield Air Barrier.

They measured the internal temperature 2m inside the terminal entrance with the Air Barrier on and off. In this instance, the temperature was 25°C with the Air Barrier switched on, rising to 38°C when turned off. Once the Air Barrier had powered down, it took less than ten seconds for the temperature to return to 38°C.

Further improvements

After installation, the airport reported several positive changes.

The installation of the Enershield Air Barrier also resulted in an increase in occupant comfort and a decrease in dust, sand and fly ingress.
