The main entrance to the food manufacturing facility was fitted with a rapid-opening PVC door, yet it remained a vulnerable point for flying insect ingress. The nature of the product being manufactured naturally attracted flying insects, and although numbers were maintained within acceptable limits, this required ongoing interventions such as multiple electric insect units and periodic fogging.
As part of the site’s continuous improvement programme, the business wanted greater control over insect ingress at this key access point. Their objective was to enhance food safety integrity and uphold the standards expected by their high-profile customers.
Following a detailed site survey and a clear understanding of the business requirements, we specified the Durashield Air Barrier. We installed this in front of the existing rapid-roll door. The Durashield Air Barrier creates a highly efficient seal, forming a virtual door across the opening to prevent flying insect ingress without restricting access.
To measure performance, detailed fly counts were taken from the electric insect units in the collating area. Results showed a 73% reduction in flying insects when comparing the 12 months before and after installation. In addition, no further fogging treatments have been required since commissioning.
The installation of the Durashield Air Barrier has significantly reduced flying insect ingress at the facility. Previously, control relied on electric insect units and periodic fogging, both of which act only after insects have entered the building. Since installation, the Air Barrier has delivered a proactive, continuous defence at the entrance point, helping to maintain food safety standards and supporting the site’s hygiene objectives.
